About Wulai Old Street

Wulai Old Street, located in Wulai District of New Taipei City, is a well-known indigenous cultural district in northern Taiwan. It first developed into a commercial hub during the Japanese era, when the forestry industry flourished in Wulai. The area has long been home to the Atayal people, one of Taiwan’s indigenous groups, where indigenous and Han cultures blend into a vibrant multicultural community. Situated at the confluence of the Nanshi and Tonghou rivers, the town is surrounded by mountains and winding streams, creating beautiful natural scenery. Local delicacies are also a highlight, featuring ingredients such as Maqaw (Mountain Pepper), millet wine, bamboo tube rice, makino bamboo shoots, and small stream fish and freshwater shrimp.

The name “Wulai” comes from the Atayal language, meaning “boiling hot water.” The area is famous for its hot springs, which are mildly alkaline springs known for their clarity. Another must-see attraction is the Wulai Waterfall, about 80 meters high, plunges like a silver veil into the clear waters below. The small tourist log car, once used for transporting timber, now offers visitors a nostalgic ride through the valley. After arriving at the Wulai Trolley Waterfall Station, visitors can stop by the Forestry Life Museum next door, which offers a glimpse into the area’s logging history. From there, you can also take a cable car up to Y Yun Hsien Ecological Park above the waterfall and enjoy a refreshing forest bath.

On Old Street, the Atayal Museum introduces the traditions, artifacts, and customs of the Atayal people, offering an excellent way to explore the local culture.A trip to Wulai feels like stepping into a hidden paradise — the perfect escape for sightseeing and leisure.

Visiting Wulai offers a different charm in every season — cherry blossoms in spring, river fun in summer, maple leaves in autumn, and hot springs in winter. The Wulai Hot Spring Community Development Association warmly welcomes all visitors.
